With this winter being so mild, the weather was steller for a December day. Tampa fishing charters are always fun this time of year when the weather is this nice. The temperatures were in the 70-80's all day long and the water temperatures weren't too bad either. Other than having to do quite a bit of paddling into the wind today, the conditions for doing some flats fishing in Sarasota Bay were ideal.
We decided to depart on a low tide and see if we couldn't see some redfish and trout stacked up in the pot holes scattered across Sarasota bay. The winter season is when the mullet are usually really thick in this area. We saw a ton of mullet boats out in the bay cleaning up. Lots of times you'll have reds and trout mixed in with these mullet schools picking off the leftovers that the mullet leave behind. On today's Tampa fishing charter we covered a lot of ground (probably 5-6 miles) and scouted lots of area. We never came into any really big schools of fish, but we did find the fish scattered throughout the flats and had a lot of hookups. We probably caught 15 red fish total on the day, which wasn't bad at all even though we had to work a lot of ground to get them.
One of the best parts of the day was watching my friend Chad from FishNCheap.com go in the drink while he was attempting to fish standing up on his new kayak. Rookie! Haha... We didn't get a chance to run to the bait shop this morning so we went with straigh artificial lures today. We had a decent amount of success with gold spoons and fluttering CAL jigs. The sebile stick shad suspending model (white lady w/ glitter) also had a lot of success today. Here is a picture of one of the monster redfish I caught.
